Hi Eileen,

I've been studying the Aberdeenshire area and have discovered the Doric dialect. Is there any information on whether the Burnett ancestors spoke in this dialect?

Thanks!
Lisa

Lisa

I haven't done any actually research on our ancestors speaking Doric; however, it is really common for certain phrases to be said in it, even currently. I' kinda jus come oot tha way :)

lol! Yea I kinda thought that was the case... guess I'm looking for a more "organic feel" for them beyond text in a book, names, dates and such.. I've been watching videos of Aberdeenshire, what a magically fantastical place it is!! My heart belongs to bonnie Scotland...

Hello Lisa,
Many thanks for your query.
The Doric dialect, which is regarded as being local to the Northeast,is primarily a rural dialect. Families such as the Burnetts of Leys would have spoken in a more general Scots dialect influenced to an extent by the fact that, down the generation, they & their sons were educated by tutors who would, themselves, have had an education which included the classics such as Latin.
Best wishes
Eileen

That answers exactly what I was wondering.
