Eileen, in the Holly and the Horn John Burnet is said to be the first to be styled of Leys. I took this as he being the 1st Laird of Leys. However extrapolating information from the National Trust portraits he would be the 6th Laird, meaning that Alexander Burnard would be the 1st Laird. (An example is Sir Thomas Burnett 1st Baronet - the National Trust refere to him as the 13th Laird of Leys). Using John Burnet as 1st Laird, Sir Thomas would be the 8th Laird. Should I sequence the numbering of "Laird of Leys" from Alexander Burnard or John Burnet. Thank you.
My apology for having missed your query. Yes, Alexander Burnett was the first and you should start with him. The reference to John Burnett being styled "of Leys" is purely linked to some changes in the land held by the family. Hope this helps. Eileen
