My maternal grand father was Edward William Burnett b. IoW 13 Aug 1862 died Portsmouth Hants 08 Apr 1930. His father was Edward Burnett (according to IGI, baptised at St Thomas Portsmouth; 07 Jan 1838) grandfather Edward Burnett (according to IGI, also baptised at St Thomas Portsmouth; 27 Mar 1808) and great grandfather Thomas Burnett possibly born at Portsmouth c.1766 who may have been a son of Joseph Burnett. There appear to have been a good number of Burnetts living in Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight prior to these dates. Family tradition held that the group was founded by a Burnett who came from Scotland and settled in the area. Can any one help me to establish if this was so?

I have the same lineage as you and my mother, Evelyn Burnett born in 1904 in Southsea Hampshire, always told me that the family came from Scotland and that we were related to the Dukes of Argyle. She used to ask her father James Burnett son of Edward Burnett son of Edward Burnett why he was not a duke and he used to answer her that the youngest son of the youngest son of the youngest son got nothing. So far I have not been able to discover a link to Scotland.
