| I've been researching my family tree since my father linwood c. burnette passed away 5yrs. ago. I found out info on my gg grandfather a matthew h.(hill) Burnett being born around 1809 in hanover virginia. His father was a david burnett(circa 1785?) married to a sally/sarah hill(circa 1785?),she was born supposedly in hanover, not sure of her parents or david's parents. This is where I'm stuck.Matthew hill burnett lived in new kent va.,was married to a lucie ault/auld?They had five children, she passed, then he remmaried to my gg grandmother a angelina whitlock born 1839 king william virginia, and in turn they had five children, one of them being my g grandfather larkin c. burnett.I have a copy of a deed of land from new kent that matthew sold in 1867 and a deed for land purchased in hanover/beaverdam district in 1869,I really need help piecingthe puzzle of my family, eveyone didn't have the e on the end,it was added with my dad,his father my grandfather didn't have an e on the end either.I don't know when matthew actually passed(1878?)or where he is buried.I've checked hanover death records from 1857-1892,nothing to be found on either gg grandparents or ggg grandparents.I do have census records with him on them, and also he is listed on some census records on house of Burnett website.I also can't find out any info of my gg aunt ,his daughter named gabrielle.any help would be appreciated, thanks rickie |

Hey Rickie, I'm an 11th generation Burnett(e). The E got tagged onto the end of my family's line in Georgia when my Grandfather went to public school. Since they'd moved from the country, the school system "citified" his last name. I think that may be what happened to your family as well. My Uncle (David Jackson Burnette Jr.) did a big genealogy spread on our family, and I tried to dig through what I have, but I think I need more names in order to help you out. My line of Burnett(e)s came here in 1635 to VA- and have sort of done a loop through the Carolina's into Georgia (where my grandpa Burnett(e) was born without the E and had it tagged on later as I mentioned) and then that part of the family actually worked it's way back to Virginia over the years where I actually reside today. It looks like in the 6th Generation, is when the Burnetts split up and started moving around- unfortunately that's around the time that you're looking for your family's info. If you have some other family names I might be able to help you trace some things. I just figure if you're a Burnette with roots in VA- we're probably distant cousins, and I'll be happy to help :) Feel free to shoot me an email lanaya.burnette@gmail.com (i'm on Facebook too if you are). |

HEY GUYS
I AM A MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA BORN BURNETT.
THE BURNETT FAMILY IS TRULY A GLORIOUS FAMILY THAT HAVE ENJOYED IMMENSE SUCCESS AND SOMETIMES HEARTBREAKING FAILURE.
I HAVE VISITED OUR HOMEPLACE, CRATHES CASTLE IN SCOTLAND, ON TWO OCCASIONS OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. IT IS BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED AND IS NOW A JEWEL AMONG THE NATIONAL TRUST OF SCOTLAND IN PRESERVING THE GREAT CASTLES OF SCOTLAND.
JUNE BORK WHO LIVES IN CALIFORNIA AND WHO COMES FROM THE BURNETT CLAN HAS WRITTEN FOUR EDITIONS OF "THE BURNETT'S AND THEIR CONNECTIONS. I STRONGLY URGE EACH OF YOU BURNETT'S TO SEARCH OUT THIS GENEOLOGY WRITINGS AS IT GOES BACK TO THE LATE 1500'S WHEN JOHN BURNETT WHO WAS A WELL CONNECTED BUSINESS MAN IN THE ABERDEEN SCOTLAND AREA (JUST A FEW MILES FROM BANCHORY SCOTLAND WHERE THE BURNETT CLAN, CRATHES CASTLE IS LOCATED). JOHN CAME TO AMERICA IN THE EARLY 1600'S AND BEGAN A COMMERCIAL EXPORT BUSINESS TO ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND.
THE FIRST BURNETT OF PROMINENCE CAME FORTH WHEN ROBERT THE BRUCE GOVERNED SCOTLAND IN THE 1400'S. HE APPOINTED A BURNETT AS THE KEEPER OF THE FOREST FOR ALL OF SCOTLAND. IT WAS THEN THAT HE BUILT THE CRATHES CASTLE WHICH AS I SAID BEFORE IS ONE OF THE GREAT CASTLES IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION IN SCOTLAND. NO BURNETT CAN DRIVE UP INTO THE GROUNDS OF THE CASTLE AND NOT SHED A LITTLE TEAR OF JOY AT THE WELCOMING SITE OF THE CASTLE AND THE GROUNDS.
JUNE BORK'S HISTORY OF THE BURNETT CLAN EASILY QUALIFY HEIRS TO BECOME SON'S OR DAUGHTER'S OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.
THE BURNETT'S CAME FIRST TO VIRGINIA. THEN A LARGE FAMILY OF BURNETT BOYS IN SUBSEQUENT GENERATIONS DECIDED TO HEAD WEST. MY PART OF THE FAMILY STAYED IN MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA HOWEVER ANOTHER BROTHER ENDED UP IN EASTERN TENNESSEE (KINGSPORT AREA) AND ANOTHER IN NORTHERN KENTUCKY (JUST SOUTH OF CINCINNATI) AND ANOTHER WENT TO TEXAS IN WHAT IS NOW BURK BURNETT, TEXAS. PURPORTEDLY THERE WERE 5 BROTHERS WITH 1 IN VA (MY FAMILY), 1 IN OHIO, 1 IN TENNESSEE AND 1 IN TEXAS.....BUT THERE IS MISSING HISTORY ON THE 5TH BROTHER.
THE BURNETT FAMILY HAVE BEEN FAMOUS LAWYERS, JUDGES, ELECTED OFFICIALS AND HONORABLE KEEPERS OF THE LAND AND HONORABLE PEOPLE IN THE EVERYDAY WALKS OF LIFE.
TO ALL BURNETT'S.....THE MORE YOU SEARCH THE HISTORY OF OUR FAMILY THE MORE PROUD YOU WILL BE. WE CAME FROM THE HIGHLANDS AREA OF SCOTLAND WITHIN MILES OF BALMORAL WHICH IS THE SUMMER HOME OF THE ROYAL FAMILY OF ENGLAND.
THANKS, BILL BURNETT |

Your preaching to the choir Bill. Welcome to the forum and I hope you find out more interesting things about the family.
On a side note. We've had a few murderers, smugglers, and other assorted scalawags in the family too.
